Matale

Matale is the only district in Sri Lanka where an ancient book of written history is found known as Pannagamam “Five Headed Serpent” .Matale was the site of major battle in1848 when Matale Rebellion started and the British garrison in the Fort Macdowel was placed. The city is also the birth place of Monarawila keppetipola who led the Wellassa rebellion against the British. Matale is a small regional city at the heart of the island and the road North of town is lined with dozens of spice plantations.
